A one-hour freak storm caused roofs to fly off and uprooted a few trees!

A freak storm occured at Jalan Pasir putih around 4.30pm which had cause a havoc in Ipoh city.

IPOH: A one-hour freak storm caused roofs to fly off and uprooted a few trees that damaged power cables but, so far, no one was reported to have been injured.

Zinc roof on houses and shops around city centre and residential areas here were blown off.

The storm, which happened at about 4.15pm Tuesday, had affected at least eight houses in Kampung Baru Pasir Pinji and Hoover Park.

A few trees in the two housing areas had also been uprooted by the strong wind, with some damaging the power cables.

Ipoh City councillor Kevin Chang said he had alerted the Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) after receiving reports from residents.

"TNB sent technicians to visit the affected areas and carry out remedial works," he said. "We will be discussing with the welfare department to see how we can help the affected residents to fix their roofs," he said.

Meanwhile, on Jalan Leong Boon Swee and Jalan Yang Kalsom, several signboards and awnings installed outside the shophouses had collapsed.

A witness, who only wished to be known Chong, said he did not expect a freak storm to happen though he noticed that Ipoh had been experiencing heavy rain in the evenings for the past three days.

Chong, 35, said some of the roof tiles on his hardware shop were blown off.

"The broken tiles are scattered all over the road. I hope the pieces did not hurt anyone or scratch vehicles that passed by," he said.

Man arrested for cheating graduates with fake jobs

Graduates looking for job, please be careful.

There could be more of these predators out there. If these so called agents ask for money upfront, they are most likely bogus.

CHEATING GRADUATES WITH FAKE JOBS

KEPALA BATAS: The police have arrested an unemployed man in his 20s who allegedly cheated 42 fresh graduates with fake jobs by charging them a fee of between RM420 and RM600 for the past one year.

Seberang Perai Utara police chief ACP Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said the man, who posed as a recruitment agent, was picked up on March 19 at his house in Tasek Gelugor here where documents such as interview forms, medical examination forms, personal documents, certificates, resumes and bank cards, as well as a computer were seized.

"The suspect would visit institutions of higher learning here and in the neighbouring states to offer jobs to fresh graduates and distribute job ads.

"The unsuspecting victims, who were cheated of RM27,000, lodged police reports after the suspect kept delaying job interviews," Abdul Rahman told reporters here Tuesday.

CHEATING FOREIGNERS WITH WORK PERMIT

Meanwhile, the police arrested another unemployed man in his 40's who allegedly cheated 40 foreign workers of RM70,000 for work permit renewal.

Abdul Rahman said the man, who was arrested on March 23 at a house in Mak Mandin, Butterworth where the police confiscated calling cards, levy payment forms, 143 Bangladeshi, Myanmar, Indonesian, Indian and Vietnamese passports, a Perodua Viva car, bank account books, five business stamps and four government agency stamps.

"The suspect who posed as an employment agency staff charged RM2,000 for the work permit renewal," he added. - Bernama
